User generated content ROCKS! Many people would love to have their photo or story published in a magazine but never really get the chance to. Over the past few years I’ve experimented with different content generation and community websites (as everyone who’s been a member for a while knows). What I’ve learned over these years is that people LOVE to contribute a long as they get something in return. That something usually boils down to a couple things. Recognition, and self satisfaction or a feeling of accomplishment. And a feeling of having contributed something to the hobby and science of meteorites.
In light of this, it’s been proven that user generated content is king. The Featured Meteorite Gallery on pages 20-21 of the premiere issue of the magazine proved this, along with the very popular and much more important Mifflin Meteorite Strewnfield Map which I published a few months ago.
If it were not for the countless hours of work and tireless efforts of hunters and scientists sharing their information and data the most detailed publicly available map of the Mifflin strewnfield would not exist. All I did was compile it, and put it into a visual form for everyone to view, study and enjoy. I hope with this data people will recover more stones, and provide even more data on this strewnfield.
The point is that I think it’s been proven beyond any shadow of doubt that when people work together more gets done, and the data and information is more valuable because of it. It’s in this frame of reference that I invite everyone who would like the opportunity to see their work published and shared, to please take part and participate in this effort.
