As of today, Meteorite Hunting & Collecting Magazine is being placed on indefinite hold. Meaning, I won’t be folding it or closing it down, but I won’t be producing any more issues until we’re in a better financial position. MHC magazine has put me and my family into a very bad financial position.

This magazine was created solely by me, and has been a labor of love for the last year, but as things are, and considering this economy, it’s just not feasible to continue this magazine as it stands right now. I’ll be refunding people as I can. IF you are a customer, I apologize for the delay, and will be refunding you as soon as possible. Everyone will get a refund (minus any issues/products) they’ve received.

Ok guys, I’ve been working hard here this past month. Things are moving forward, not as fast as I’d like, but there is progress!!! I hate to say it, but I failed to meet my 30 day goal.

We’re still on track to print and ship the September 2010 issue VERY SOON! I’ve worked a deal that will allow the 3 back issues owed to be printed one by one until we’re back on schedule.

Meteorite Hunting & Collecting Magazine will become a Quarterly publication starting retroactively with the January 2011 issue. The price for the full color publication subscription will be $45 no matter where you live in the world. The old pricing structure made it nearly impossible to maintain. The new pricing helps cut costs, and provides a more manageable product, and allows me to keep and sustain the magazine, and even grow it into the future. The model I had before was bi monthly (6 issues per year). That’s a massive undertaking for me financially. There is plenty of content to publish, and the workload is quite manageable. The problem came down to me being able to afford the thousands of dollars to print and deliver every two months. That was not enough time for me (an inexperienced publisher working entirely on my own) to produce and fund the magazine. Which is why I had to come up with a completely new model (with lots of input from my fellow meteorite friends) that could not only help me deliver, but would be able to sustain the magazine and grow it into the future.

MHC Goes Quarterly

NEW! Quarterly ($45): The new model for MHC Magazine will be a Quarterly publication. 3 months between issues, 4 issues per year. In addition, so everyone will be able to receive the 6 issues they originally signed up for, I will extend all current subscriptions into the second year for free until they receive all 6 issues. At which point the subscription will be up for renewal on the Quarterly schedule starts again. It is a limited edition print run of the highest quality glossy and vivid full color publication that everyone has received thus far. A limited number of copies are printed of each issue, and as such, once the back issues are sold out there are no immediate plans to print more. This preserves the collectibility of the magazine’s $20 retail “newsstand” price and value to the subscriber.

A Note on Quality: I want to add that MHC Magazine will retain the same HIGH QUALITY paper and vivid color as before. No changes will be made to the subscription only premium glossy limited edition print issues. The premium quality will only be available by subscription or by purchasing the limited edition back issues.

Print On Demand!

NEW! Standard Copy (Matte Finish): I’m also adding a Print on Demand (POD) service for ALL previous issues. This is a standard product printed on Matte paper for $9.99. These magazines are Print on Demand meaning anyone who would like back copies of previous issues, will be able to get them all, indefinitely with no limit on number. The Standard “Matte” Copies are NOT the same quality as the Subscription only limited edition version. This allows people to get back copies anytime they want. Advertisers: I have a responsibility to my advertisers as well. They paid for their ads for a specified duration, and to deliver on that I will be extending their ads duration. In other words all advertisers get their advertisement displayed for the full duration of their advertising agreement.

This should provide a more sustainable model.

05/26/2011 UPDATE: 30 Days: Getting Back on Schedule & Moving Forward

Hi Guys, These last few weeks have been hectic, but I believe I’m close to announcing something that I hope will be exciting for everyone.

There are some changes taking place with the magazine. One in particular will offer a service which I think will greatly improve the magazine’s ability to stay on schedule in the future as well as offer a better system for back issue ordering. In addition this may even help grow the magazine.

Some of the major changes have been made already, some are still in the works, and once I get everything pulled together behind the scenes, I will make the announcement.

Articles: I’m also making some changes to the way content in displayed and accepted for inclusion in the magazine. Some contributors have emailed me their articles with no formatting and only typed or copy and pasted into emails. While I greatly appreciate the contribution, it makes my job more difficult and time consuming because I must transfer this over to a Word or TXT document before editing. Sometimes formatting gets lost in the process and actually adds to my workload because it must be reformatted and edited, before actual editorial work can start. It’s very time consuming work to create files from scratch. So please make all article and photo contributions either through the form here:

Articles & Content on The Official MHC Blog: Many people online would simply like to read the articles without having to download software, a PDF document or having to log in to the site. Guest Articles: From time to time I will be publishing articles from “guests” on the blog. Anyone is welcome to contribute meteorite related article content on the blog. If you have a good meteorite related article or story, I’d be happy to consider it for publication. Not all contributions will be published as there are certain editorial considerations. However, I’ve received many emails with great articles, and read many forum posts which would make great topics for articles on the MHC Blog. The great thing is that your article will be read by more people, than if it were just in the magazine or PDF download.

Featured Meteorite Photo Gallery Coming Back? In the premiere issue of MHC magazine I created the Featured Meteorite Photo Gallery and it was some of the most viewed content in the magazine. Since that issue I’ve produced 2 others which did not include the gallery. People asked abut it and expressed that they would like to see it in the magazine again, and so. The gallery will be back! You’re welcome to email your photos for inclusion in the gallery, but keep in mind there’s only so much room on the 2 page spread. I hope to have more photos in the magazine as more issues are created. Ultimately I’d love to have many full page, and two page spreads. If you have an EXQUISITE MUSEUM quality meteorite, or one you found in your backyard, send over some high quality photos and I’ll do my best to get it into the magazine!
